While in Tokyo I jumped on a bullet train and made my way south to Kyoto; the train traveled 285kph (177mph)! That is crazy! I could not look outside too much as the speed was too fast for my brain. This video is not sped up. I love riding trains and this was one of my goals. It was cool.
I landed in Kyoto and made my way to the Fushimi Amari shrine. It is famous for over 10,000 torii, which were donated by businesses
As I made my way to the Kiyomizu-dera temple I grabbed a snack. You cannot eat on the streets or in trains in Japan, as a respect to the food. You have to stand next to the vendor and eat what you purchased. They would not like the Minnesota State Fair. Also, you have to take your trash with you, which is rooted in the philosophy of personal responsibility
As I was waiting to take a photo (this place was crowded!) I thought to myself, “Is that the back of Hugh’s head?” I work with Hugh, and not only is it odd that we would see each other in Japan since he lives in the UK but that I rarely see the back of Hugh’s head as we are mostly on Zoom! But there you go, proof the world is small.
I checked into my hostel (K’s) and took a nap. I am famous for my 17 minute power naps but this time I reset my alarm a many times. After my nap I went to the Gion neighborhood, checked out another temple, and had dinner at another izakaya where a nice young man next to me helped me decipher the menu. The Japanese do not speak much English so Google Translate is a great way to communicate. Everyone is so friendly.
My head hit the pillow as I was once again exhausted, despite the earlier nap. It was a good day.
