Traveling with a group is different than what I am used to as it is slower and you don’t get total control but this group is super chill and easy. We woke our first full day at 05:00 so we could make our way to Hakone to catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji and enjoy the famous Onsen (hot spring). When we landed in Hakone we took a cable car and Ropeway to the top. The weather frankly sucked and we saw nothing, but when we got to the top we ate famous eggs boiled in the springs and black ice cream made with sesame.
The eating here is crazy! At home I eat the same two meals every day so my relationship with food is more about fueling my body than satisfying my palette so this trip is an experience. I also do not eat sushi. But I am tasting everything that fits in my stomach.
One of my goals for this trip is to use every bidet I am offered, to decide if I want to buy one. The Japanese love a clean ass. They have heated seats on the trains and some have music that plays for privacy. These people know how to poop.
We checked into our hotel where they have a Onsen (hot spring) and this is where the learning began. You first picked out your yukata, which is a robe you wear everywhere. To the spa, dinner, and breakfast. Everywhere. You can also grab snacks (more food!) and flowers to enjoy in your room!
Laura (Leilani’s friend) and I were roommates and dubbed our room the napping room since we were going on five hours of sleep over two days and a nap was priority over the hot springs. After a nap we went to dinner which was more of an experience. The amount of food we got was crazy!
After dinner we grabbed ice cream and made our way to the hot springs. There were a couple of private tubs for mixed sexes (couples) but the majority was in male or female spaces since it was fully nude. No photos but it was really nice.
At 22:00 (10pm) we returned to the dining room for ramen. The food never ends.
It was a great day filled with lots of new experiences and tons of food.
